Health Effects
| From MSDSEMERGENCY OVERVIEWRISKCumulative effects may result following exposure*.May produce discomfort of the eyes*. *(limited evidence)POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTSACUTE HEALTH EFFECTSSWALLOWEDThe material has NOT been classified as ***harmful by ingestion***. This is because of the lack of corroborating animal or human evidence. The material may still be damaging to the health of the individual, following ingestion, especially where pre-existing organ (e.g. liver, kidney) damage is evident. Present definitions of harmful or toxic substances are generally based on doses producing mortality (death) rather than those producing morbidity (disease, ill-health). Gastrointestinal tract discomfort may produce nausea and vomiting. In an occupational setting however, unintentional ingestion is not thought to be cause for concern.EYEThere is some evidence to suggest that this material can cause eye irritation and damage in some persons.SKINThe material is not thought to produce adverse health effects or skin irritation following contact (as classified using animal models). Nevertheless, good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable gloves be used in an occupational setting. Entry into the blood-stream, through, for example, cuts, abrasions or lesions, may produce systemic injury with harmful effects. Examine the skin prior to the use of the material and ensure that any external damage is suitably protected.INHALEDThe material is not thought to produce adverse health effects or irritation of the respiratory tract (as classified using animal models). Nevertheless, good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable control measures be used in an occupational setting. Not normally a hazard due to non-volatile nature of product. |
| From MSDS Long term exposure to high dust concentrations may cause changes in lung function i.e. pneumoconiosis; caused by particles less than 0.5 micron penetrating and remaining in the lung. Prime symptom is breathlessness; lung shadows show on X-ray. Substance accumulation, in the human body, may occur and may cause some concern following repeated or long-term occupational exposure. |

| From MSDS SWALLOWED - Immediately give a glass of water. - First aid is not generally required. If in doubt, contact a Poisons Information Center or a doctor. EYE If this product comes in contact with the eyes: - Wash out immediately with fresh running water. - Ensure complete irrigation of the eye by keeping eyelids apart and away from eye and moving the eyelids by occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. - If pain persists or recurs seek medical attention. - Removal of contact lenses after an eye injury should only be undertaken by skilled personnel.SKIN If skin or hair contact occurs: - Flush skin and hair with running water (and soap if available). - Seek medical attention in event of irritation. INHALED - If fumes or combustion products are inhaled remove from contaminated area. - Other measures are usually unnecessary. NOTES TO PHYSICIAN - Manifestation of aluminum toxicity include hypercalcemia, anemia, Vitamin D refractory osteodystrophy and a progressive encephalopathy (mixed dysarthria-apraxia of speech, asterixis, tremulousness, myoclonus, dementia, focal seizures). Bone pain, pathological fractures and proximal myopathy can occur. - Symptoms usually develop insidiously over months to years (in chronic renal failure patients) unless dietary aluminum loads are excessive. - Serum aluminum levels above 60ug/ml indicate increased absorption. Potential toxicity occurs above 100 ug/ml and clinical symptoms are present when levels exceed 200 ug/ml. - Deferoxamine has been used to treat dialysis encephalopathy and osteomalacia. CaNa2EDTA is less effective in chelating aluminum. [Ellenhorn and Barceloux: Medical Toxicology]. |
